Toolmaker / Tool and Die Maker

The toolmaker is a highly skilled mechanic capable of creating and repairing dies, fixtures, molds, assembly devices, and other manufacturing tooling used to produce manufactured products, working from engineering drawings or from specifications for the product to be manufactured.

The toolmaker is skilled in the operation and programming of a wide variety of manual and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, including lathes, mills, grinders, electrical discharge machines, drill presses, saws, hydraulic presses, machining centers, etc. The toolmaker uses a variety of inspection and testing equipment to verify quality of equipment and components created, including micrometers, calipers, hole gages, optical comparators, coordinate measuring machines, height gages, dial indicators, sine bars, planer gages, etc.
