Production Setup Machinist

The Production Setup Machinist works in a metalworking manufacturing operation. The Production Setup Machinist works to engineering drawings, manufacturing process plans, and operator instruction sheets, and selects and installs tooling, fixturing and workholding devices into machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, CNC machining centers, CNC turning centers, and grinders in order to make the machine tool ready to machine the desired part to proper specifications and within the allowed time standards. The Production Setup Machinist uses measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, hole gages, height gages, coordinate measuring machines, optical comparators, plug gages, etc. to take measurements of the machined parts during the setup and makes adjustments to the machine in order to achieve dimensional and geometric specifications according to the engineering drawing.

When setup is completed, the Production Setup Machinist turns the operation over to the machine operator for the production run of parts.

The Production Setup Machinist must possess knowledge and skills in:

  • Blueprint Reading
  • Math
  • Communication
  • Machining Operations
  • Inspection and Measurement Techniques
  • Safety Practices
  • Materials
  • Use of Hand Tools
